New Year’s Resolutions
The second Christmas ends, the Facebook ads and evening infomercials switch from the latest kid’s toy to the diet and exercise craze. Advertisers know that people are starting to shift their thoughts from presents to pounds.
Without a doubt, the gyms will be full the first three weeks of January. People are signing up for calorie/points counting programs. And we start believing that the next year will be our “fittest” year yet.
Having gone through one of the major seasons of life, having a baby (now a toddler), I’m working to shift my mindset from dominating my body as a machine to appreciating my body as a partner. It’s delivered a healthy baby. It manages an auto-immune disease and is recovering from a ruptured disc. It survived two half-marathons and several 5k/10k races. It managed me through the most stressful times of my life so far. It deserves my appreciation.
So this year, instead of the burden of guilt and weakness, I’m setting alternative resolutions that will match the type of life I want instead of forcing my body into the type ‘society’ wants. I want to focus on my entire body and not just what the scale says.
Therefore, I’m designing goals around several categories: general health, family, emotional/spiritual, and business.
And, for the first time, I’m using a word to help guide my year. Keep reading to hear about my goals and my overall word for 2018.
What are Alternative Resolutions?
Alternative Resolutions are several things:
- Resolutions that support the life I want in 2018 and beyond.
- Life habits that are achievable and maintainable. They can become a part of my everyday life.
- They come from a place of encouragement and positivity, not blame and guilt.
- They work together to support all aspects of my life.
New Theme for 2018
A lot of bloggers and entrepreneurs choose theme words for the year. They help set the tone for the coming months and act as a check for new projects or efforts. Examples include fierce, dominate, nurture, grow, love, witness, focus, bold, joy, connect, perseverance, stewardship, clarity, and dream.
For me, I’m choosing “Consistency“. The past couple of years have been so very hectic for us with weddings, baby, graduate school, new jobs, etc. And 2018 will bring some more changes to our lives. But, what I want to do, is establish some consistency with our day to day lives, with this blog, and with our relationships. That way, as we approach other changes (since life will always be changing in some way), we will have a strong foundation that we can always rely on.
